BMW Championships 2012

My friend EB was kind of enough to think of me when he had an extra ticket to the PGA event being held just 3 miles from my home. When the storms decided to roll in late Friday, they moved the start of the 2012 BMW Championships up 3 hours! 3 hours from 11 am starts to 8 am starts. What I thought was going to be a bit of a sleep in day, turned into a 5:30 am wake up call since the gates opened at 7am. EB text me at 5:39 saying no rush to get to the course, but he was going early because of a ticket screw up. Good thing he did or he wouldn’t have captured this beautiful sunrise over hole 15.

I snoozed til 8. My first order of business upon arriving to the course was to find my friend, DZ, who was volunteering as a sign holder for one of the day’s pairings. I had been assigned a mission to sneak a picture of him since photographs were not allowed on the course. Some people were blatantly holding their phones over their heads and taking pics. Any official, volunteer, or police officer would quickly call them out and tell them to put it away. I wasn’t going to let that happen to me, so I figure out that if I held my phone at the tip of my nose, I could cover it up with my hand and get the perfect shot. I caught up with DZ on hole 4!

I even got a little video on 5! After my mission was accomplished, I was ready to head over to meet my group at the Wadley Club at the green on hole 15. No paper bracelets for this fancy place, ribbon instead.

And fancy bathrooms inside a trailer!

Down to the real reason for being there, watching stud golfers like Adam Scott.

Right before I took the photo above, I was 5 feet from getting hit by another player’s approach shot. It landed in the stands just next to where I was standing. Flashbacks of getting hit back in 1998 at the Western Open surged through my thoughts. I did get a lot of cool things out of that experience, but I wasn’t interested in repeating any of it. Next group up, was Sergio, Matt Kuchur, and Hunter Mahan. This shot looks back down 15.

There were 2 rows of folding seats in front of where I was standing. A few people in the front row took off, so BW and I grabbed 2 seats, then luckily 2 more opened up and our whole group was now front row! I started to use the zoom on my camera phone at this point, which has now proven to be a bad choice. They looked great on the small screen, but not so crisp on the PC. Ignore the graininess please! Rickie Fowler in his signature monochrome outfit and fabulous hair…

I was very excited to get a close up view of Ernie Els, the recent 2012 Open Champion.

Ian Poulter came by in his fancy pants! You could spot him on the course all day.

Another legend I hadn’t seen before was Phil Mickelson. His caddy was very vocal with the spectators who were taking pictures. “Put it away!” He probably said it 15 times. I thought he should have been more focused on caddy duties rather than silly camera phone pictures. He was paired with Jason Dufner who’s lining up his putt.

Then the man everyone waits to see, Tiger Woods.

The fans still love him. Scandal has been forgiven or forgotten. To end our day, we watched him tee off 17. The sound his tee shot makes is significantly louder and harder than any other player’s tee shot. His strength with a club is amazing to watch!

Thanks to EB for the PGA experience!

Last time I saw you, you said you were going to run a trail 50 miler. And now you’re watching golf? Not even playing golf, which is super lame, but watching it? NMP would be so disappointed he would unfriend you on FB if either of you had accounts!

I still am, I’m just not in training. That race is in April 2013. So I don’t need to start training until…say… mid March? Did you know there will be a $25,000 bonus for any runner than can break the U.S. Trail 100 mile record? Will we see you there?
