Mini Marathon 2011

Delayed post.  Been waiting for the official Mini-marathon photos to come out.  There was one that I really wanted to show everyone if they got it but they didn't, so here goes the post.  Since I had to go to the Mini Marathon expo for packet pick up last week, I figured it was a great time to splurge on some new kicks.  The convention center has a ton of vendors so I knew it be my best look at some variety.  I consulted with my ultra running community and decided on a pair of New Balance 890s

I have never paid attention to the weight of a shoe, but as I become a full fledge member of the ultra community I see why this information is valuable.  This shoe weighs 7.65oz!  Its like air!  Since Mama and I were walking the mini, I didn't waste time trying them out.  Broke them in during the race.

Mom arrived Friday and I treated her to our traditional lasgana dinner.  We chatted, watched a movie, then hit the bed for an early 5:15am wake up.  Mom's a mini-marathon veteran now.  This was her 4th race.  But she still packs enough crap in her and my pockets to feed a nation.

With the threat of rain, she carried her trusty umbrella too.  Can not mess up the hair for Mothers Day!  I had sent in a seeding time and landed in corral E, but started back in W with her.  E = 5,000 runners in front of you.  W = 30,000 and 30 minutes to even get to the start line.  Oh well, just more bonding time for us.

It was about 50 degrees and overcast.  Not a pretty start, but they did lead us off with some fireworks this year.

One of my favorite parts of the race is going by the zoo.  They always have mascots and the elephants are out watching us go by.  Last year, the lemur.  This year, the walrus.

The first part of the race was pretty uneventful and actually went by really fast.  Once we got by the track, the rain started.  It was just a drizzle at first.  Mom braved the wetness because she did not want to embarass me with her umbrella.  The Moo cows were set up just outside the track again, so we stopped for the photo op.  I can't get enough mascot pictures!

By the time we were on the track, the rain picked up.  Pretty big drops were coming down now.  I told Mom to get out the umbrella and take cover. I was not embarassed at all, but apparently she was because when we got to the spot where they take your picture, she hid under the umbrella.  I said "hell no", they needed to see who's doing this.  So I forced it up but they didn't get any pics.  But they did get video!!!

As I looked back around the track, we were the only ones with an umbrella and I thought it was awesome!

I've kissed the bricks before but never got a picture, so this one is pretty special to me.

As we left the track, the rain stopped and the sun came out.  Finally some blue skies to take us to the finish.  The bar on the way back used to serve beer.  I was hoping they were back at it this year but I was disappointed to just find water.

The last mile was straight down New York street which was decorated with racing flags the entire length.  Look at Mama go!

We finished in 3:33:45, just 49 seconds slower than last year!  Mom blames her non-PR on my kiss the bricks picture.  I still think we did a great job for being another year older!  We didn't stay around for any of the post-race festivities.  Mom had one thing, and one thing only on her mind.  She wanted a pedicure.

It was her day, so that's what we did!  We got some food when we were done and headed home for a nap.  Usually, we celebrate Mother's Day early because of the race, but this year they coincided so Mom stayed all weekend.  I had a prior engagement Saturday night, but we picked back up with our weekend on Sunday with a Mother's Day brunch at my cousin's house.  It all was more great memories of time spent with the lady that made me!  Thanks Mommy for all you do for me!
